CARPA exists because geography shouldn’t determine health outcomes.

If you live in rural, regional, or remote Australia, you already know the reality. The specialist is a six-hour drive. The psychologist has a four-month waitlist. The nearest hospital with an ICU is two towns over. Patient travel schemes exist but nobody told you about them. And when you finally get an appointment, you’re explaining your situation from scratch because your records didn’t make the journey.

We’re here to help bridge that gap.

What We Do

CARPA provides practical information and resources for two groups of people: Australians living in rural and remote areas who are navigating a health system that wasn’t designed with them in mind, and the health practitioners who serve these communities.

For patients and families, we offer guides to accessing care, understanding entitlements, navigating telehealth, and making decisions when healthcare needs start to conflict with where you live.

For practitioners, we provide resources on rural and remote practice — the realities of working in the bush, cultural safety, professional development, and the unique scope of practice that comes with being the only clinician for hundreds of kilometres.

We don’t provide medical advice. We’re not a substitute for your GP or specialist. What we offer is the practical, navigational information that helps you get to the care you need — and make the most of it when you get there.

Why This Matters

Around seven million Australians live outside major cities. Health outcomes in rural and remote areas are measurably worse than in metropolitan areas — higher rates of chronic disease, lower life expectancy, higher rates of potentially preventable hospitalisations.

Some of this is about workforce shortages that will take decades to address. But some of it is about information, navigation, and knowing what’s available. Patient Assisted Travel Schemes go underutilised because people don’t know they exist. Telehealth has transformed what’s possible but many people don’t know how to access it. Support services exist but aren’t well publicised.

We can’t fix the systemic issues. But we can make sure people have the information they need to work within the system as it exists — and to advocate for something better.

Our Approach

We write for people who are busy, practical, and don’t need things sugar-coated.

Our content is:

Australian-specific. We cover Medicare, state-based schemes, Australian health services, and the realities of the Australian healthcare system. Generic international advice doesn’t help when you’re trying to figure out IPTAAS or find a bulk-billing GP in a regional centre.

Practical over theoretical. We’re less interested in policy debates and more interested in what you can actually do. Who to call, what forms to fill out, what questions to ask.

Respectful of rural realities. We don’t assume you can “just” drive to the city. We understand that leaving a property isn’t simple, that farming doesn’t pause for medical appointments, and that rural communities are resilient — they just shouldn’t have to be quite this resilient when it comes to healthcare.

Honest about limitations. The system has gaps. Some problems don’t have good solutions yet. We won’t pretend otherwise.

Who We Are

CARPA is an independent health information resource. We’re not affiliated with government health departments, though we link to their resources extensively. We’re not funded by pharmaceutical companies or private health providers.

We believe accurate, accessible health information should be available to everyone — regardless of postcode.
